HOW DANISH ROCK BECAME DANISH

- IDENTITY-HISTORICAL ASPECTS OF DANISH ROCK CA. 2000-2010 IN A LATE MODERN PERSPECTIVE

This research project deals with aspects of the history of Danish rock identity in the period from approximately 2000 to 2010. The project takes its starting-point in the significant changes that Danish rock underwent in the period in reception-historical respects, with the principal thesis that a Danishness-related perception of Danish rock has increasingly made its presence felt as an element in the ongoing construction of an identity-bearing Danishness.

The ambition of the project has been to create empirically-based theory on how, over the past 20-30 years, Danish rock has been an active co-creator of ideas about Danishness. Via two articles, the project has shed new light on the relationship between Danish rock and Danishness in the early 21st century by focusing on a number of important but hitherto unremarked aspects.

In combination, the two articles show how Danish rock has been an active co-creator of notions of Danishness on the part of both listeners and music critics during the period, and that a Danishness-related perception of Danish rock has made its presence felt as part of the ongoing construction of identity-bearing elements among modern Danish music consumers.
