Songwriting (S)

Purpose

The Bachelor in Songwriting is a full, independent 3-year degree programme which qualifies you for an artistic career as song writer. In addition to this, the degree forms the basis for further studies in related Master programmes.

Job opportunities

It is difficult to say something specific about the job opportunities for song writers, but most of the graduates in Songwriting typically write songs for their own bands/projects or for other artists, publishers, films etc. The job opportunities both depend on the market trends in the industry and the political priorities in relation to culture and the arts, and may therefore be extremely variable.

Qualifications

With a Bachelor in Songwriting, you will:

  • Be able to create and present your own works, based on contemporary artistic practices;
  • Have the ability to develop, carry out and evaluate your own artistic projects;
  • Have technical skills and qualifications in relation to composition, song writing and music production;
  • Have the ability to make and account for artistic as well as commercial choices;
  • Have knowledge of the operational spheres, activities, conditions and development opportunities that characterize the music industry;
  • Have developed your own individual working methods, strategies and methods of learning.

Structure and organization of the programme

The Bachelor in Songwriting is rated at 180 ECTS credit points, the full-time equivalent of three years of 1,620 working hours each. A one-year full-time equivalent includes teaching, self-studies, exams and all other study-related activities.

The programme covers three areas of learning:

Creativity is the primary area of learning in the subject Artistic Projects, where you will work with your own personal, artistic development. The objective is to develop your creative competencies and practical experience to help you create and realize your own works and projects.

Craft is the primary area of learning in the subjects Songwriting, Music Analysis, Music Technology, Instrument and Voice, where you will be working on the analytical skills and craftsmanship that provide the basis for creating and communicating your own works. The objective is to develop your knowledge and skills in order to help you reach your artistic goals, and be able to work as a song writer in various professional settings.

Reflection is the primary area of learning in the subjects Arts & Culture and The Music Industry, where you will learn to see your artistic practice in a wider artistic, cultural and business-related context. The objective is to develop your reflective competencies, to enable you to analyse concepts, processes and problems that may relevant to your profession.

Other conditions

The Bachelor in Songwriting is a full-time study programme, and attendance is compulsory to all teaching activities. Thus, you will not be able to have extensive work activities or pursue your own career parallel with your studies. The primary language of instruction is Danish. In connection with foreign guest teachers or study trips, however, the teaching will typically be conducted in English.

Application
When applying for Songwriting, you must submit:

  • A filled in and signed application form (see www.musikuddannelser.dk).
  • Short CV in which you state your background. (Max 1 A4 page)
  • 5 songs on an audio CD.
  • Sheet with lyrics for the 5 songs.
  • Receipt for paid application fee.

Everything must be submitted in 4 copies no later than 1 December at 12:00 noon CET.
