Music Management (MM)

Purpose

The Bachelor in Music Management is a full, independent 3-year degree programme which qualifies you for employment in an existing company or for establishing your own company within the music industry. In addition to this, the degree forms the basis for further studies in related Master programmes.

Job opportunities

The degree qualifies you for a wide range of jobs within the music industry, e.g. in record companies, booking agencies, music management companies, at festivals, music venues, in the media and internet industry, as well as for similar jobs in other, related industries.

The job opportunities both depend on the market trends in the industry and the political priorities in relation to culture and the arts, and may therefore be extremely variable.

Qualifications

The Bachelor in Music Management is an interdisciplinary study programme, whose research-based teaching combines subjects from social studies and the humanities with practical, vocational disciplines. Upon completion of the degree you will have obtained a basic knowledge of, and an ability to apply, the methods and scientific foundation associated with the disciplines of the programme, as well as acquired fundamental professional qualifications.

With a Bachelor in Music Management, you will:

  • Have acquired a theoretical and practical insight into the conditions and development of the music industry;
  • Have obtained knowledge of and skills in relation to formulating and motivating innovative solutions to problems in a professional context;
  • Be able to collect, analyse and process relevant data, as a basis for making assessments and decisions;
  • Be able to plan, organize, manage and evaluate processes and projects that are typical of the music industry;
  • Be able to present information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialists as well as non-specialists, orally as well as in writing;
  • Have developed your own individual working methods, strategies and methods of learning.

Structure and organization of the programme

The Bachelor in Music Management is rated at 180 ECTS credit points, the full-time equivalent of three years of 1,620 working hours each. A one-year full-time equivalent includes all the work that is required in connection with the programme, including classes, self-studies, exams and all other study-related activities.

The Bachelor in Music Management comprises of two years of core courses, followed by one year of profile studies:

  • The core courses give you the fundamental economic, managerial, legal, musicological and professional competencies that are needed to enable you to complete the profile studies. 
  • During the profile studies you are given the opportunity to gather and apply knowledge and skills from the programme’s three areas of study, as well as to concentrate on your own professional areas of interest, and thereby tailor the degree to the type of career you have in mind.

The programme covers three areas of study:

  • Music industry studies offer you an insight into the operational spheres, types of activity, methods and conditions of production that characterize the industry. In addition to this, you will gather practical experience within selected areas of the music industry. 
  • Musicological disciplines give you an insight into music history, genres and styles of music, the interrelationship between music and culture/the society, as well as a basic knowledge of music as an art form, its creative processes, theoretical terminology and concepts. 
  • Business studies offer you an insight into the fundamental economic, legal and managerial aspects of operating a business, and provides knowledge of company management seen in the context of the business environment and existing framework conditions.

RMC’s Music Management programme collaborates internationally with a number of businesses in the music industry, ranging from small one-man firms to large multinational companies. As a student at RMC you will have access to this network, which gives you many advantages, both in relation to your studies and your subsequent job opportunities. Our collaboration with our external partners also ensures that the study programme is continuously up to speed with the latest developments in the industry.

The programme frequently uses guest teachers from the music industry. Work experience placements, projects and study trips abroad form an integrated part of the study programme’s activities.

Other conditions

The Bachelor in Music Management is a full-time study programme, and attendance is compulsory to all teaching activities. Thus, you will not be able to have extensive work activities or pursue your own career parallel with your studies.

The primary language of instruction is Danish. In connection with foreign guest teachers or study trips, however, the teaching will typically be conducted in English.

Application

When applying for Music Management, you must submit:

  • A filled in and signed application form (see www.musikuddannelser.dk).
  • CV in which you state your educational background and relevant work experience (paid as well as unpaid). (Max 1 A4 page)
  • An essay about the Danish music business. (Max 1 A4 page)
  • Copies of certificates and recommendations (if you have some).
  • Receipt for paid application fee.

Do not enclose CDs, press cuts etc., as they will not be included in the assessment.

Everything must be submitted in 4 copies no later than 1 December at 12:00 noon CET.
