FAQ's: bachelor in Music Technology (MT)

How much experience do I need to have in order to be considered for the programme?

It is difficult to give a clear answer to this question. It is both the types and the extent of your experiences that count. With regard to the types of experiences we are looking for, you should take note of the following:

  • Communication and cooperation

It is important that you have experience in working with music production in collaboration with others, so that you have not been the only person to set the standards of quality for the final product.

Hvis du således kun har arbejdet med egne projekter på computer, vil vi vurdere, at du mangler et væsentligt aspekt inden for faget, nemlig kommunikationen med en medspiller, i form af en solist, et band eller en producer.

  • Acoustic sound recording

In connection with studio recording, it is important to have experience with acoustic recording, e.g. of drums and other acoustic sound sources, and not just with sampled sounds.

  • Recording studio and concert production

Finally, it is an advantage if you have experience from both studio recordings and concert productions.

Why isn’t it enough just to have talent?

Being talented is a good thing, and is one of the preconditions for becoming a good sound technician.

However, it is “only” a 3-year programme, and in the course of those three years we need to educate you to become a professional sound technician who can live up to the standards required for the music industry.

What can I do to improve my qualifications?

The following schools offer various types of courses in sound engineering, and many of our applicants have, among other things, completed some of these courses.

Please note that RMC does NOT have a formal collaboration with any of these schools. You will probably be able to find other schools offering similar types of courses on the internet.

In addition to this, you could try to gain further experience as a volunteer, working at music venues or in community centres, or perhaps work as an assistant in a sound company or a recording studio.

I want to become a music producer. Is the programme relevant for me?

If your ambition is to work exclusively as a producer, the answer is no.

The purpose of the programme is to educate sound technicians for work in recording studios as well as concert productions.

In other words, you need to be motivated to work as a sound technician at concerts, and in connection with studio productions, the focus during the entire study programme and at the final exams is on the role of the sound technician.
It is important that you realize this before you apply.

But as you probably know, the tendency in contemporary sound production is that the roles of the sound technician and the producer overlap somewhat, while the distinction between their respective functions used to be more clear. This trend is reflected in the teaching in the MT programme, which among other things include musicological subjects such as ear training and arrangement, and where, in one particular project, the students are required to work as producers.
